Sounds like a strange title for an article on how to play the piano doesn?t it? However, singers employ some tricks that we piano players can learn from. Here are five important ones.
(1) Phrase it like a singer. Think the words to the song as you play. Many times we are so engaged in the notes on the page that we forget that most popular music is also meant to be sung. Singers naturally slow down and pause slightly at the end of a phrase to take a breath. So should we. Most of our listeners are unconsciously thinking the words to themselves as they hear the music. Unless we observe these natural pauses that singers use, our playing comes off as stiff and unemotional. Certain parts of the song may also need a tempo change. The chorus for example is usually the high point of the song emotionally. For that reason a singer may increase the tempo slightly. We should do the same. Often times the end of the song may need a slight slowing down or retard. Sometimes a verse may be very free style tempo wise, while the chorus may be very rhythmic. By listening to how a singer phrases we can learn a lot.
(2) Focus on the dynamics. One sure mark of an amateur is a constant dynamics level. Again a singer will emphasize certain parts of the song by changing dynamic levels. For example a verse may start out somewhat subdued and build dynamically to emphasize the chorus. Another way that singers vary dynamics is to emphasize certain words or phrases of what they sing. We can do the same thing by slight changes in dynamic level. Again the key is to sing the words to ourselves as we play, and do what is appropriate.
(3) Use contrast. Songs that have the same dynamic level, the same tempo, or the same degree of harmonic complexity get boring pretty fast. The key here is to change things a bit phrase by phrase or section by section. In other words if one phrase is loud, make the next one soft. If one section is fast, make the next one a little slower. If the chorus is rhythmic, make the verses a little more free style. If the song starts out with big two fisted chords, pare things down to a single note melody or two part harmony. I think you get the point. Variety is the key. Good singers do this instinctively.
(4) Play with the melody. A good singer will very often make small changes to the melody. Not so much that the song becomes unrecognizable, but just enough to keep things interesting. Often a singer may play with the timing a little to add some suspense or jazz things up a little bit. Or maybe they will add a few ornamental notes to add interest. Almost never do you hear a good singer sing the song just as it was written. Neither should we.
(5) Make your own arrangement. You may think, I could never do that. However, by observing some of the techniques mentioned above you are beginning to do just that. As with anything else, practice makes perfect. Listen to great singers, and one thing they all have in common is that they sing a song their own way. None of the superstars sound like anyone else. That?s what makes them great. We need to think the same way. Why are Elvis impersonators laughable? Simple. There can only be one Elvis! There can only be one Aretha Franklin. There can only be one Sinatra. There can only be one Nat King Cole. I think you get the point. While it may be OK to learn from the greats, to try to sound just like them, takes away that element that is uniquely you.
We may not all be singers, but we can take a lesson from imitating their style. If we follow a few simple techniques: think about words and phrasing, vary the dynamics, use contrast, vary the melody, and make a song uniquely ours we can sound much more professional.

It may seem odd for me to say that, but you can tell a lot about a man by his laugh. Real laughter is uncontrollable. For just a moment something strikes us as funny and the sound of laughter pours forth spontaneously and without any real control on our part. It bubbles up and gives away the secret part of us that thinks the event or situation presented is funny. Laughter can be faked, but that's part of what I want you to analyze when you're listening to his laughter. First of all is his laughter real or fake? You can always tell when someone has one of those completely goofy laughs that nobody in their right mind would choose to have -- those silly sounding laughs that cause everyone else to laugh too. You've also heard those completely fake laughs that sound like a bad actor in a Dudley DoRight play! Most people have fairly normal sounding laughs and they are spontaneous. If the guy you're interested in fakes his laugh occasionally to laugh at a small child's attempt to tell a joke, that's okay. But, if he fakes his laugh on a regular basis, I would seriously question his overall ability to present his authentic self to the world. You may or may not feel like analyzing why he's faking it, but it's important to note if he's presenting a false joviality to the world on a regular basis. Does he laugh easily? I've met a few men who had serious anger and violence issues. They don't laugh easily. Also, guys going through depression and other darker emotions obviously aren't going to laugh as easily as someone who's naturally happy and at peace with his life. The brooding silent type may seem sexy for awhile, but in the long run, you're going to want to have some lightness and fun in your life too. It gets to be a real bore to hang out with someone who's always incredibly serious and entertaining darker thoughts. Does he laugh at people or with people? Nobody likes to be made fun of, but this has more to do with what your man finds as funny. Does he find humor in ridiculing others? Does he laugh at others because everyone is incredibly foolish or stupid in his eyes? Is he constantly critiquing people looking for a reason to laugh at them? It doesn't matter how witty or funny his presentation, it's not a good sign if your man takes his personal pleasure in laughing at others. You also don't want someone who constantly makes himself the butt of all jokes either. I've always found an underlying self esteem issue when people spend a lot of time making fun of themselves. That's not the same as being able to laugh at ones mistakes on occasion. I'm talking about habitually devaluing one's self. Also, is he able to find joy in someone else's jokes? You don't want someone who only laughs at his own jokes and nobody else's. Does the sound of his laughter fill you with joy? Listen to the actual sound of his laughter. Does the sound make your heart go pitter patter? It doesn't matter if he sounds like thunder on a summer day or if he giggles like a little girl! What matters is that his laughter is infectious and makes your heart lighten. Imagine coming home from a really bad day at work. Upon entering the house, you hear his laughter coming from the kitchen. Does that sound lift your spirits? Or infuriate you even more? You want to be with someone who's laughter makes your heart sing. Laughter is the best medicine and you want to chose a man who's laughter heals your weary mind. Do you laugh at the same things? Yes, you want to be your own person with your own interests and your own unique sense of self, but you also want to share good times with your partner. You need to pick someone who has a similar sense of humor to your own. There's nothing worse then having your partner roll their eyes like you're so uncool every time you burst out laughing. What determines a person's sense of humor is wide and varied, including upbringing and level of education. If you share the same overall sense of humor, chances are that you are fairly compatible in those areas. You're somewhat on the same wave length. Do you laugh at the same time? You want to pretty much agree on when is the proper time and place for goofing around and making each other laugh. If he likes to crack jokes and laugh a lot during foreplay and you find it to be a total turn off, then you're going to have problems. If he keeps laughing at your girlfriends when you're trying to have a serious conversation, then you're not going to get along so well. This also works in the other direction. If you're the one who is constantly laughing and joking and he's the one getting upset that your timing is inappropriate, then you're not going to like hanging out with a fuddy duddy. Compatibility shows itself in little things like timing. If you've already got a guy and you're considering spending the rest of your life with him, start watching his laughter. Decide if the things you see are what you want in a lifetime companion. In order to answer the above question, one must seek to understand the limits of the human sense of hearing. Most people realize that the human ear fails to hear sounds that many animals can detect. For example, humans do not hear the noise made by a dog whistle, but a dog pricks-up its ears whenever a human blows into such a whistle. Those sound waves have a frequency that goes beyond the limits of what the human ear can hear. Many of the sound waves that remain undetected by the human ear can be detected by a sensitive car audio equalizer. The frequency of a sound indicates the rate at which the sound making device is moving. A fast moving device makes a high frequency sound; a slow-moving device makes a low frequency sound. The human ear cannot hear the sounds with the lowest and the highest frequencies. The car audio equalizer has the ability to pick-up the signals from those sounds. The owner of a car audio system wants an equalizer that can sense, that can pick-up or detect the signals from the high and low frequency sounds. Within the car audio system, the electrical signals leave the preamplifier and travel to the equalizer. In the car audio equalizer the signals loop around the processing unit and the frequencies of the signals are adjusted. The adjusted signals then travel back to the preamplifier. The preamplifier sends the adjusted signals to the amplifier. In the amplifier, the power of the adjusted signals is increased. The high-power signals then cause the speaker to vibrate. The vibrating cone of the speaker causes it to emit sound. Because the signals have been adjusted by the car audio equalizer, all of the sounds coming from the speakers will be heard by the humans riding in the car with that car audio system. For example, humans do not hear the noise made by a dog whistle, but a dog pricks-up its ears whenever a human blows into such a whistle. Those sound waves have a frequency that goes beyond the limits of what the human ear can hear. Many of the sound waves that remain undetected by the human ear can be detected by a sensitive car audio equalizer. The frequency of a sound indicates the rate at which the sound making device is moving. A fast moving device makes a high frequency sound; a slow-moving device makes a low frequency sound. The human ear cannot hear the sounds with the lowest and the highest frequencies. The car audio equalizer has the ability to pick-up the signals from those sounds. The owner of a car audio system wants an equalizer that can sense, that can pick-up or detect the signals from the high and low frequency sounds. Within the car audio system, the electrical signals leave the preamplifier and travel to the equalizer. In the car audio equalizer the signals loop around the processing unit and the frequencies of the signals are adjusted. The adjusted signals then travel back to the preamplifier. The preamplifier sends the adjusted signals to the amplifier. In the amplifier, the power of the adjusted signals is increased. The high-power signals then cause the speaker to vibrate. The vibrating cone of the speaker causes it to emit sound. Because the signals have been adjusted by the car audio equalizer, all of the sounds coming from the speakers will be heard by the humans riding in the car with that car audio system.
